Lick's refracting telescope

This is the the Great Lick Refractor, a 36" refracting telescope which was build in 1888 on Mount Hamilton, CA.

The telescope is named after James Lick. He was a very wealthy man from San Francisco who made his fortune by building piano's, making Ghiradelli Chocolate famous and buying real estate just before the Gold Rush began. As he loved astronomy, he dedicated a part of his fortune ($700,000.00) to build the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton.

The refractor is not only a telescope, but a tomb stone as well. Lick is buried underneath it.
