Bird watching

American Avocets are related to the European Pied (black & white) Avocet. The biggest difference is the color of it's head: the American Avocet has a grey - in breeding time peachy red - head and neck, whereas the Pied Avocet shows a black cap. This is actually how the bird got it's name 'avocet': they resemble European advocats or lawyers who once wore black caps.

In Dutch we simply call this bird a 'kluut', after it's call klute-klute-klute.
