Drought

In the Netherlands I used to complain about the excessive rainfall, like many other Dutch. I was glad to move to sunny California, the Golden State. Now I know the 'Golden' is not referring to a golden sun in the sky, but to the brown, dry hills and mountains. 'Golden' sounds so much better than 'barren'.

California had two years of drought already, and 2009 seems to become yet another dry year. Not much rain fell this winter and there's 30% less snow in the mountains. That definitely won't fill all the reservoirs, lakes and rivers. On the picture you see a part of Vasona Lake. Half of the lake is quite empty.

We still have a few weeks of 'rainy season', let's hope it's going to rain a lot (never thought I would ever say that). And if you want to help saving water: here are some tips from the Santa Clara Valley Water District.
