Pebble

I shifted a stone in a river on earth
Changing the water's flows
Impossible to stop a river's soul
Always following the stream it knows
Once maybe stuffed with rain and snow
It carries my pebble to sea
To lay it rounded and polished, erosion
To rest in the calming lee

I shifted a stone in a river on earth
Assuring I won't fall in oblivion
I furnished proof of my being, my name
'Cause by shifting that one single stone
The flow won't ever be the same

[My translation of the Dutch original 'De steen' by Bram Vermeulen]
