Damme statue

Damme is a very small but famous town in Belgium, where about 750 people live but more than 30 restaurants reside.

This statue stands in the garden of the 'Onze lieve vrouwe' Church where 'Karel de stoute' was married in 1468. In the 12th century floods left a wide body of water 'het zwin' over the west of Belgium, a large dam was build to stop the flow, hence the name Damme.

It received city rights in 1180. It also was the birthplace of a famous literary person called 'Tijl Uilenspiegel'
